Recognized as one of the world’s top makers of ultra-premium meads and cider, Moonlight Meadery founder and owner, Michael Fairbrother had the vision of creating a destination location for his award-winning brew of mead.

With a manufacturing facility located in an industrial park in Londonderry, Michael knew he wanted to capture New Hampshire’s picturesque landscape as a backdrop for his new location of tastings, tours and eventually Bed & Breakfast. He also wanted a farm to operate an apiary for harvesting honey, a main ingredient sourced in Moonlight Meadery.

On a Sunday, October morning in 2020, Michael happened to see a real estate listing for a farmhouse located on 98-acres of land in Pittsfield, New Hampshire. Hours later, Michael and his wife Berniece Van der Berg, also an integral part of Moonlight Meadery found themselves in awe of not only a beautiful piece of land with acres of rolling hills, but the property also offered a horse barn and farmhouse.

“The original farmhouse built in 1753 needed a lot of work; however, it boasted the simplistic appeal of a New England Bed and Breakfast,” recalled Michael Fairbrother, owner of Moonlight Meadery. “The modern-aged barn with its original post and beam remains as the foundation of our tasting room. Another attribute to the farm is this 7,000 sf saw-mill style barn which provides many possibilities for a wedding venue or perhaps to relocate our manufacturing one day,” added Michael.

“We have seen that agritourism can be a successful business model for a lot of business owners if done right,” said Jennifer Boulanger, CRDC Assistant Vice President. “Michael and Bernice’s vision of combining a tasting room, tours and a Bed and Breakfast destination while using the land to farm key ingredients used in production is a cost-effective way to do business. CRDC provided gap financing from its Direct Loan Program in concert with a conventional loan provided by Primary Bank.”

“We can’t thank CRDC enough,” said Michael. “Purchasing this beautiful piece of property has truly changed our lives and we are thankful for the opportunity CRDC and Primary Bank provided to us. It’s hard work, seven-days a week, but we love it.”
